It is the last album which features lead guitarist Randy Bachman. He brings some of the best guitar riffs the band has ever recorded, especially on the hit single “American Woman”, later successfully covered by Lenny Kravitz. The times of war Vietnam are prominent on the album and their anger can be heard in songs like “No Time” and “No Sugar Tonight”. The blues and rhythms are mixed with their hard rocking guitar riffs and drum rolls, but a songs like “Talisman” is pure folk in the traditional English style.

When Lenny Kravitz got the first Grammy of his career this year for best rock performance, it was also the first Grammy any African American has won in the rock category. But I’m thankful and accept it on behalf of all those who invented the art form. But Kravitz is one of a very few African American rock performers, and his audiences tend to be overwhelmingly white. I don’t understand that concept at all.

Lenny Kravitz has never been one for boxes. When he broke onto the scene 22 years ago with Let Love Rule, his brand of psych-and-funk-tinged retro rock, coupled with his roots his mother was black, his father white, his religion a mixture of Christianity and Judaism , confounded critics and radio executives alike.
And to an extent, that’s never really changed, though, with each successive hit — “Let Love Rule,” “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” “Fly Away,” “American Woman,” to name just a few — he’s become less of a curio case and more of a career artist. You know, ‘It’s rock, but it’s too funky. For lack of a better term, there are plenty of slots on America, a far-ranging, lushly produced opus that seems destined to give radio programmers fits. Over the course of 16 tracks, it dabbles in whip-smart funk, crackling soul, classic pop and, of course, all-out rock, to name just a few genres , and features guest appearances from Jay-Z and Drake.
Not surprisingly, fitting in wasn’t what Kravitz had in mind when he was recording it. His only goal was “to make a double album But for all the genre-jumping, there’s one theme that keeps popping up throughout the album: the idea of unity. It’s central to current single “Stand” and it’s the core idea behind the album’s title track too. It was about a group of Americans, I’m sure somewhere tucked away, and they were saying they were disgusted by what America had become, they were disgusted that there was an African-American commander in chief; they’re not for racial equality, they would like America to be back to the way it was years ago and, basically, they would do anything it took to make sure that their idea of America was restored, down to assassination, etc.

Lenny, your work here on earth is done”. The result is an accessible and accomplished work that offers an array of sonic candy While 5 is pretty solid throughout, the second half of the album is where real gems lie with rock, funk and soul musical diversity”. Club wrote “Kravitz’s fifth album—appropriately enough, it’s titled 5—has a few exhilarating fragments scattered throughout its 66 minutes. But those moments are too infrequent to be easily extracted Kravitz’s most forgiving fans will appreciate the diversity and sheer volume of 5; everyone else should give it a pass.
In the production of the album, Kravitz worked with digital technology such as synthesizers and tape loops providing the album with a more modern sound. The album contained more of his ’70s-inspired songs, funk and soul, mixed with his rock style.
